Step 1: Setting up the Essentials
Once you make it to the manager dashboard, the first thing you will want to do is complete the Essentials tab. On this tab, you will be able to edit and save 8 essentials of your hackathon which include your hackathon Name, URL, Theme and much more.
Here are some screenshots to show the locations of each essential item and details on each.

Devpost Homepage
Name
The hackathon name is, obviously, what the hackathon will be called. This name will be visible on the Hackathon search, Newsletters and your header title banner if not replaced by an image.
URL
Choose a unique URL that includes some part of your hackathon name so that it is easy for people to remember. For example, the Disrupt SF 2018 URL was disruptsf2018.devpost.com.
Note that once you publish your hackathon you will not be able to edit your URL anymore. Contact us if you need to make a change to the URL.
Tagline
The tagline is a short phrase or sentence describing the call-to-action for participants and is a great place to concisely sum up your hackathon. Your tagline will show up as the main header for your hackathon site and when featured on the Devpost homepage. Make sure it gives a sense of what the goal of the challenge is for participants.
We suggest two naming pairs:
- A clear name that describes the competition, and a clear call-to-action for participants
- A short fun or cool name that might not be as descriptive, and a clear call-to-action for participants
Manager contact email
Participants will have questions for you about your hackathon. Include a support email that is regularly checked as this email address will be connected to the Email the hackathon manager link on your hackathon site.
Host
Please add the name of the company organizing the hackathon. Participants can search for your hackathon with this host name and easily view all hackathons launched by you if you add the same host for all of your hackathons.
Theme Tags
Devpost users select interests which tie directly to hackathon Theme tags. You can select up to 3 different Themes, which will help the Devpost platform suggest your hackathon to users with matching interests. You can also suggest a new theme, but if we do decide to create it for you, that new theme will likely not have many users associated with it.
- What type of hackathon is this? This is similar to eligibility, but selecting the type of hackathon in the essentials tab lets the Devpost team know how best to support your hackathon.
- Time ZoneAll hackathons are set to (GMT -05:00) Eastern Time by default. However, if you’d like to use your local time zone, you can set that up here. Once this is changed, all of the times associated with your hackathon will be changed as well.
Once you add or edit your essentials, be sure to click Save at the bottom of the page and start setting your eligibility requirements.
